What is a cheesesteak?
A cheesesteak is a sandwich made with thinly cut slices of beefsteak and melted cheese (sometimes Cheez Whiz), all on top of a hoagie roll.
Who invented the cheesesteak?
In the 1930s, Pat and Harry Oliveri—Philadelphia natives—are often credited as the inventors of the cheesesteak by serving chopped steak on an Italian roll. They owned a hot dog stand and decided to try their luck with a new sandwich composed of beef and grilled onions. The cheesesteak became wildly popular, with Pat and Harry moving the operation out of their hot dog stand and into a standalone restaurant called Pat’s King of Steaks. What type of cheese goes on a cheesesteak?
Although popularly debated, the type of cheese on a cheesesteak can differ from White American cheese, provolone to Cheez Whiz. Some restaurants let American or Provolone cheese melt under the heat slightly to give a creamier consistency to the sandwich.
How to make the perfect cheesesteak?
On a lightly oiled grill top at a medium to high temperature, slices of steak are browned and scrambled into smaller pieces. Cheese is then placed over the meat, letting it slightly melt. All is scooped up and pressed onto the roll. Common ingredients that are additional add ons to the base of the cheesesteak: sauteed onions, mushrooms, ketchup and hot sauce.
